One of the most mercurial sharks from the inaugural season of Shark Tank India, Ashneer Grover has trademarked his name. Aditi Tuteja, a practicing lawyer at the Delhi High Court who specializes in IP rights and trademarks, shared the update along with the certificate of the same on her LinkedIn post. She announced the successful registration of Ashneer Grover's name as an intellectual property under class 41 of the Trade Marks Act 1999. Tuteja stated that
Celebrity trademarks are a complex issue in India... but celebrities can exercise the existing laws to protect their name and image."
She further mentioned that several celebs, including Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Ajay Devgan, and others, have trademarked their names. Remarking on the Ashneer Grover trademark, the attorney wrote that this "not only strengthens the brand identity but also expands commercial reach beyond entertainment." The digital copy of the trademark shows that the application for the former BharatPe co-founder and director name was done on July 13, 2024, and it was granted on September 18, 2024.
Meanwhile, the netizens had varied reactions on LinkedIn, with some taking a jibe at the futility of such trademarks and others suggesting future Grover parents to avoid naming their kids as 'Ashneer.' A few others wondered if this move by Ashneer Grover entails him more royalties from Sony TV for using his name during the promos of Shark Tank India! There's no clarity on the legalities of the same. Ashneer Grover has made no public statement regarding the same either. His latest (restricted) post on X/Twitter wishes his fans a Happy New Year.
