My favorite things with Daniele Mottier, Jour de Fête, Aspen

Since 1988, the Cozy French cafe Jour de Fête has been a family-run business.

The eatery shut down in 1996 for a decade but was reopened by Olivier Mottier in 2006. Since then, one of the Mottier family has been working at the restaurant, serving the community home-style, affordable food. Each recipe has a story and is often named after either a loyal customer or a family member.

After 30 years of being an Aspen mainstay, Jour de Fête will close its doors on Jan. 26, 2025.

To honor their father and as a Christmas gift to him, all of the Mottier siblings: Daniele Mottier, 31, marketing and events manager at Challenge Aspen; Gigi Mottier, 29, administrative coordinator at Aspen Community School, Preston Mottier, 24, production assistant in New York, and Mia Mottier, 16, Junior at Aspen High School will be working on Christmas Day, 7 a.m to noon. The family invites locals and visitors alike to stop by this holiday season to celebrate.

For the current issue of Winter in Aspen and Snowmass magazine, we caught up with Daniele Motitier and asked her to share some of her favorite things.

Daniele Mottier grew up in Aspen and spent 17 years working on and off at her family's restaurant, Jour de Fête. She studied international business and Spanish at Stetson University and explored product design before taking on marketing, sales, and events as a career path. Outside of work, you'll find her teaching Pilates at Tonic Method, trail running with the Challenge Aspen Solemates team, playing music with her boyfriend, Al, and enjoying time with her dogs.

Favorite Aspen winter activity

Skiing with Challenge Aspen. In addition to my full-time position at Challenge Aspen as the marketing and events manager, I teach skiing to athletes with disabilities. Whether it's a hot chocolate at Sam's with Michael "Peter Parker" Newland or laps on Funnel Bypass with Thalya, my best winter days in Aspen are spent on the hill with my favorite adaptive athletes.

Favorite mountain or ski run

I love them all. Each one has its benefits, but my favorite has to be Tiehack -- it's where my boyfriend and I love to spend an afternoon away from the crowds, stopping to take in the views at The Cliffhouse. It's one of those special activities that make you feel like the luckiest person in the world.

Favorite coffee at Jour de Fête

There's nothing like grabbing a cappuccino with some Bulletproof ghee from Jour De Fête to enjoy on the gondola, but I'm a big oat Matcha gal, and ours is SO good and pairs nicely with the Farmer's Bowl.

Favorite meal of the day

I grew up eating every dinner at the table as a family, so my favorite kind of meal is a big dinner, cooked by my mom or dad with friends and family at my childhood home in Woody Creek. These meals last for hours and are usually paired with a little bit of red wine.

Favorite winter month

December. As crazy and stressful as our little town can get over the holidays, December is a special month in Aspen. It starts slow and ends with one of the busiest weeks of the year. There's an energy to the month that is contagious and gets me into the holiday spirit every year!
