Browns Make Surprising Quarterback Decision Amid Jameis Winston Injury

Amid a slew of injuries at the quarterback position, the Browns annoucned this week that Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinston would be making his first start of the season, with Cleveland already down Deshaun Watson, who is out with a torn Achilles tendon, and backup Jameis Winston, who has been bothered by a shoulder injury.

The goal for the second-year QB, who took over for Winston among his struggles vs. the Chiefs in Week 15, is to stay within the system as the Browns hope to pull off the upset against the heavily favored Bengals.

"Let's play within the system. Let's trust our progressions, trust our reads, trust yourself, trust your guys around you and good things will happen," offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey said this week. "So, I think that's something that's going to be obviously new for me, calling it with Dorian. I haven't called it with him, except in the preseason, and just getting that feel of getting him into a rhythm as quickly as possible."

Of course, given the way things have gone for the Browns this season, it's fair to wonder what will happen should DTR struggle or get hurt himself. It turns out that Winston's shoulder problem is bad enough to warrant him being dropped all the way to No. 3 on the depth chart, which means former Patriots starter Bailey Zappe will be the Browns' backup.

That's how Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com is reporting it.

She wrote on Twitter/X: "Breaking: QB Bailey Zappe is the #Browns No. 2 today behind Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and ahead of Jameis Winston, who was questionable with a sore shoulder, source tells clevelanddotcom."

The Browns will kick off in Cincinnati at 1 p.m. EST.
