ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) -- With nearly 380,000 statewide cases to date this flu season, resent numbers from the New York State flu tracker are showing some signs of the virus' spread slowing down.
In Monroe County, numbers are up -- with 2,145 cases of the flu reported in the week ending February 15. 125 of those cases were hospitalized. Statewide, just more than 42,000 cases were reported in that same week.
The week prior, Monroe County was under 2,000 cases -- with 1,936 cases.
This week in 2024 saw similar numbers, with 42,322 cases reported in the state. From then, fewer cases were reported each week.
The most cases for the 2024-2025 so far was reported during the week ending February 1, with 53,156.
News 8 has previously reported on a number of hospitals in our area seeing an influx of flu patients. Health experts indicated this season could be more severe than the last.
URMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Apostolakos said it looks like the peak will be higher than last year, "suggesting the infectivity of this strain may be higher."
Experts say prevention is important, and it is not too late to get vaccinated for influenza and stay home if you aren't feeling well.
