JESSAMINE CO., Ky. (WKYT) - In the midst of our everyday busy lives, and typically even busier holiday seasons, we can often forget to take care of ourselves. And that includes our mental health.
"Especially with something like a mental health crisis, we're not in a state where we can really process new information or think rationally. So having a crisis plan is like planning for a house fire, or teaching your kids how to call 911," said Melinda Barkley, the Communications Director for the Jessamine County Health Department.
The Jessamine County Health Department and New Vista are teaming up to host a CODE RED Training event on December 2nd.
CODE RED is an acronym that helps each person create their individualized crisis plan. It stands for Contacts, Delay Decisions, Relax and Distract.
"The holidays can be very isolating. Then you add on financial situations, or just the drama that comes with being around family sometimes. All of those things can spike our stress and anxiety and lead to a crisis. So it's very important to plan ahead for the possibility of such a thing."
Mental Health America of Kentucky is also hosting a similar event on December 5th.
"A lot of folks experience an uptick in mental health symptoms during this time for various reasons. Mental health first aid is a really powerful tool that focuses on the fact that recovery is possible and help is available," said Hannah Brosnan, the Executive Director of Mental Health America of Kentucky.
Those at MHAKY have a few tips to help in the meantime.
"Schedule time for yourself and for activities that really recharge you. If you can't physically be with your loved ones, think about scheduling a phone call with them, visiting friends, or a local community center or faith-based community."
