David Alas's superb strike catapults East Boston boys' soccer into Division 4 quarterfinals - The Boston Globe

Jets coach Jayson Smith believes it's the furthest East Boston has advanced in the state tournament.

"It means the world," Smith said. "I know everyone in the school is very proud of this team. They're a great bunch of guys. Nothing's going to stop them from getting better every day."

Alas received a pass about 10 yards outside the box before skipping through three defenders and lashing a left-footed effort to the top corner with 30 minutes to play to reinstate the lead for the Jets (11-4-4), who held off the Generals (12-6-2) the rest of the way.

"We didn't give up," Alas said. "[Hamilton-Wenham] came back, but we came back better in the second half. There were 10 minutes left and I was telling everyone, 'Let's go'. They didn't back down, and that's what got us the win."

Sophomore Jeronimo Perez scored the opener for the Jets, making it two straight games with a goal for the midfielder. Junior Owen Waddell scored for the Generals off a great cross from classmate Nick Stein.

The Jets now prepare for a state quarterfinal (date, time TBA) against No. 5 Monument Mountain (7-6-6), 4-2 winners over No. 21 Ipswich.
