Bucs Reveal Controversial 'Go-for-2' Strategy vs. Chiefs

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost a heartbreaker to the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime 30-24, but the team had their chance to win the game.

With Baker Mayfield and the offense needing a touchdown to tie the game, Liam Coen's unit marched down the field in 12 plays, with Ryan Miller scoring the touchdown to make the score 23-24.

Now, the Buccaneers had a choice to make. Go for a two-point conversion to win the game but also potentially lose it, or kick the extra point and put your fate in the lap of the football gods.

The Bucs did the latter, and Patrick Mahomes got the ball first in overtime, and the rest is history.

Coen has now given the reasoning as to why the Buccaneers didn't go for the win.

"We were prepared for every situation," Coen said. "You have calls ready, at the end of the day, it's not what we did, and we have to play the cards that we were dealt, just go play and move on. I haven't spent a tough a ton of time thinking about it since. The situation played out as it did, we didn't go for it and haven't lost a ton of sleep about it. We got to move on, it's just the way it works. Unfortunately, it didn't work in our favor, you learn from it, move on, and see what happens."

Such is the aura around Mahomes and the Chiefs when the game is on the line; for most fans and media personalities alike, when you have a chance to drive the stake through their heart, you do it.

Because all Mahomes needs is a chance, and we have seen far too often that when teams play it safe, Patrick and the Chiefs make the plays they need to do and win the game.

Of course, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the Buccaneers had a chance to put the result beyond doubt and left it up to fate.

Next time they're in a similar position, there is a hope that Coen and the offense will put the foot on the throat of their opposition and go and win the game.
