GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) -- The police chief of the Greensboro Police Department has released a statement after Officer Michael Horan was fatally shot while responding to a call Monday.

"We are all struggling with the tragic loss of Officer Michael Horan, who was a valued and respected member of our Greensboro Police family," Chief John Thompson said from police headquarters. "We're especially grateful to everyone who worked around the clock to assist in the identification, arrest, and charging of the individual responsible for Officer Horan's death. We also want to thank our community and our law enforcement partners around the state for the support they have offered our department and for Officer Horan's family during this difficult time."

At 10:45 a.m., Greensboro police say they got a report about a possible person with a handgun inside the Food Lion on the 4700 block of Lawndale Drive. At about 11 a.m., shots were fired in the store, killing Horan.

A little after 1 p.m., the suspect, Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, was located in Johnston County driving a vehicle, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.

Deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff's Office began a pursuit and were joined by deputies from the Sampson County Sheriff's Office when he entered Sutton Town until the North Carolina State Highway Patrol took over and initiated a PIT maneuver.

The vehicle was stopped on I-40 near mile marker 360 at the Duplin County line, and McMillian was taken into custody without incident.
