Broccoli sold at Walmart stores in Colorado, 19 other states could cause sickness: FDA

According to the U.S Food and Drug Administration, the voluntary advisory issued by Braga Fresh applies to a single production lot of washed and ready-to-eat 12 oz. bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets and is due to the possibility that the produce could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

According to the alert, the potential for contamination was discovered during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services at a Texas store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result.

Braga Fresh stated no illnesses have been reported and noted that the product is past its 'best if used by' date and is no longer in stores, but said consumers may have frozen the broccoli for later use.

Anyone with the product is advised not to eat it. The FDA warns that listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

"Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women." states the advisory.

The advisory does not apply to any other Marketside or Braga Fresh produced products.
