Gerard Butler's Brutal 2018 Action Thriller Is Topping the Streaming Charts Thanks to Sequel Success

Gerard Butler 's appearance in Den of Thieves 2 has sent his previous outing as Nick O'Brien back to the top of the HBO streaming chart. Den of Thieves was a success for Butler when it was released in 2018, and although it has taken almost seven years to deliver a sequel, the dual success of the movies has proved that Butler's desire to continue the franchise is more than justified.

Den of Thieves sees former Marine and leader of a gang of bank robbers, Ray Merrimen (Pablo Schreiber), going up against Butler's unorthodox detective, who is hot on their heels and determined to bring the gang down. Playing out with the usual level of high-stakes cat-and-mouse chases, brutal action sequences, and a highly praised performance from Butler, Den of Thieves earned its place in a crowded market of action thrillers, and has now done so all over again in its latest streaming heist. Butler stars in the movie with O' Shea Jackson, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Evan Jones, Mo McRae, Dawn Olivieri, and Brian Van Holt.

Produced on a budget of $30 million, Den of Thieves proved to be a steal, taking over $80 million at the worldwide box office, more than enough to warrant its sequel. It did not land particularly well with critics, who gave it a 41% score and called out the tired old action movie tropes that audiences love. With the movie once again now back at the top of the streaming chart thanks to a surge of interest on Max, the film is once again proving not only its own worth, but that of the genre that just keeps on pleasing the masses.

Gerard Butler Made a Successful Action Return in 'Den of Thieves 2: Pantera'

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera arrived in theaters on January 10, and immediately overtook Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King to claim the number one spot on the domestic box office chart. The movie has already made back its budget, and is still performing well as it heads into its second weekend. This has obviously sparked conversations about a third installment, and the good news for fans is that Butler and director Christian Gudegast have not been hanging around when it comes to planning a third movie. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, Gudegast said:

"[I knew] right from the beginning... he's a man's man, he's a big dude, and we just kind of got along right from the beginning. He was sort of attracted to the kind of stuff I was writing, and by the time we did Den of Thieves, we'd done a couple of things. Then we'd developed a few things together that didn't get made, a couple of them did, and then [producer] Tucker Tooley had worked with him. We all just work together very well, and we're looking forward to continuing the collaborations."
