COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) - A man who pleaded guilty to purposely running over a pedestrian in west Columbus received his sentence in court this week.
According to court documents, 40-year-old Osman Aweys pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, with a charge of murder dropped as part of the plea, in the death of a 30-year-old man on Sept. 26, 2021.
On that day Columbus police arrived at the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Holly Hills Drive on reports of a pedestrian struck. Officers found a man on the ground with critical injuries, and he was later pronounced dead.
Police said the man was intentionally struck by a vehicle, which was driven by Aweys and who drove away from the scene. Aweys was arrested the following day after finding him asleep in the vehicle on Sullivant Avenue, a block away from the scene.
Aweys pleaded not guilty to murder charges in municipal court but would eventually plead guilty to the lessor charge on Monday in common pleas court.
On Tuesday, a judge sentenced Aweys, who received over 1,100 days of jail credit, to a prison sentence of no less than 11 years and up to 16 ½ years in prison. He will then be subject to two-to-five years of community control upon his release.
