FALLS VILLAGE - A blend of education and community partnership took place at Lee H. Kellogg School last week as kindergartners got to name the town's four snow plows.
The project, spearheaded by kindergarten teacher Amelia Nichols and supported by First Selectman Dave Barger, offered a hands-on learning experience that engaged students, while fostering local connections.
The youngsters first studied snow plows through books and discussions, discovering their importance in keeping the community safe during winter storms, said Principal Stacey Calo. They also applied their geometry skills by creating models of their own snow plows. The grand finale was a democratic process where the students voted on names for the vehicles.
The winning names - Snowy the Snow Plow, Ice Demolisher, Blizzard Buster, and Snow Breaker - captured the students' creativity and enthusiasm, said Calo.
As a special surprise, members of the Falls Village town crew visited the school with their snow plows, giving the children a chance to see their named machines up close. The visit allowed students to connect their learning to the real world and appreciate the vital work of local heroes who ensure the roads are safe during winter weather.
"The project was a wonderful way to integrate learning with a meaningful community experience," said Calo. "Our kindergartners had so much fun, and the collaboration with First Selectman Barger and the road crew helped build pride and excitement for everyone involved. The project exemplifies how creative initiatives can make learning engaging and memorable while building strong ties between schools and their communities. Lee H. Kellogg School is proud to foster such opportunities and celebrate its students' ingenuity and teamwork."
