The Houston Texans struggled to contain Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on a long touchdown run in Saturday's game, but appeared to get him back by forcing a fumble and returning it for a touchdown later in the second quarter.

But the game-changing play didn't last long, with officials overturning the fumble and adding a penalty on the Texans -- a call that didn't sit well with many fans.

Mahomes opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, showing little effect of the ankle injury that forced him out of last week's win over the Cleveland Browns.

The Texans scored twice to take a 10-7 lead then appeared to build on it when they pressured Mahomes, forcing a fumble and returning it for a touchdown. But officials reviewed the play and ruled that Mahomes' arm was already moving forward -- and that he was hit in the head during the pass rush, adding a roughing the passer penalty.

Instead of adding to their lead, the Texans saw the Chiefs retain the ball and later drive for a touchdown. Many fans took to social media to express their disagreement with the call.

"The Refs to the rescue! This decision changed the outcome of the first half," one person shared in a post on X. "Mahomes clearly had no control of the ball when his arm moved forward."

"NFL referee saw Mahomes fumble and immediate threw the flag and called roughing the passer," added another. "It's really getting embarrassing now"

Some saw it as a pattern of referees overturning calls that go against Mahomes and the Chiefs.

"If you don't believe Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs don't get bailed out by the refs all the time just watch that play," one person shared on X.
