As Tax Day looms, CT has the 3rd highest tax rates in the country

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) - Connecticut has the third highest tax rates in the U.S., according to a report.

The personal finance website WalletHub.com on Tuesday released its list of the States with the Highest & Lowest Tax Rates.

WalletHub said the average U.S. household pays nearly $14,000 in federal income taxes. While everyone has that same obligation, there are significant differences in state and local taxes.

"Every year during tax season, Americans are reminded of just how much of their hard-earned income isn't theirs to keep," said Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst. "Living in the right state can ease the stress of tax time, though, as taxpayers in the least expensive states pay less than half as much as those in the most expensive states."

Researchers compared state and local tax rates in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. They calculated relative income tax obligations by applying the effective income tax rates in each state and locality to the average American's income.

Here were the metric rankings that contributed to Connecticut's overall rank:

The only states with higher rates were New York and Illinois.

The states with the lowest tax rates were Alaska, Delaware, and Wyoming.
