It was a memorable year for restaurants. In some ways things were great, with more openings in the Lower Hudson Valley than we've seen in two years. For others, not so much thanks to the lingering effects of COVID, rent issues (and disputes), inflation and the cost -- both emotional and financial -- of what owners could endure.
One interesting trend: For the first time in a while, there were a bunch of places that closed but then reopened, often with the same name (albeit different owners) or with rebranded situations.
My rough year-end estimate includes the addition of 126 dining spots in Westchester, everything from coffee shops (a lot) to pizzerias (also a lot) to Italian restaurants, more elevated Indian spots and the influx of first-time-to-the-area chain restaurants.
It also includes 35 openings in Rockland, making for a total of 160 throughout the Lower Hudson Valley. That's 27 more than last year's 81, with no doubt some I missed.
That's the good news. The even better news? Despite what may seem like a rash of closings these last few weeks, the number of dining establishments that closed this year is on par with 2023: I counted 46 to last year's 52.
What follows is a look back at some of the places that closed in 2024. See one we missed? Email me at [email protected] and I'll add.
