When the Boston Celtics hosted the Orlando Magic Friday night, there was a special young fan in attendance at TD Garden, with Brockton, Massachusetts native AJ Dybantsa on deck to catch the game.
Dybantsa is considered one of the top high school players in the country, and recently committed to play at Brigham Young University next season. The 6-foot-9 forward is from Mass. The 6-foot-9 strong forward plays for Utah Prep, but he still remains a fan of his hometown team. Celtics Wire caught up with Dybantsa about connecting with Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, as well as some of his aspirations for his own career.
He said both Tatum and Brown have given him advice and encouragement over the years. True to form, both of Boston's stars made sure to say hello to Dybantsa during their pre-game shooting routines.
Dybantsa explained that he didn't want to reveal the advice he received from Tatum and Brown. But he did say Brown was enthusiastic about the future.
"Just keep working," Dybantsa said of Brown's words of encouragment. "You'll be here in a year."
Dybantsa smiled when asked if agreed with that assessment. "Of course," he said.
Brown might be right about his assessment. Already Dybantsa is projected to be one of the top picks in the 2026 NBA draft. He spoke about his NBA future, and what professional players he models his game after.
"My favorite player of all time is Kevin Durant," Dybantsa said. "But I play more like Tracy McGrady or Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander)."
Dybantsa will play for Durant's former coach Kevin Young, who served as an associate with the Phoenix Suns before becoming the head coach at BYU. And despite lofty comparisons or expectations, Dybantsa told Celtics Wire the one thing he wants fans to know is that he's just an ordinary guy.
"I'm a regular kid that just likes basketball," Dybantsa said.
That being said, he was much more enthusiastic about his predictions for his hometown Celtics. He spoke with confidence when asked about how they will perform this spring.
