WhatsApp has started rolling out voice messsage transcripts to all users today. At launch, the messaging app will only be able to transcribe voice messages in English, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian, with support for more languages coming in the next few months.
Voice message transcription is a feature that Apple and Google already offer in their respective messaging apps, so WhatsApp isn't exactly pioneering something new. Still, it's a handy feature when you're in a loud environment or are unable to listen to a voice message for other reasons.
The WhatsApp team highlighted that voice message transcripts are generated on your device and that voice messages are protected by end-to-end encryption. "No one, including WhatsApp, can listen to your voice messages or see the content of your voice message transcripts," the team said.
Voice message transcripts are disabled by default in WhatsApp, and users must manually enable them by going to Settings > Chat > Voice Message Transcripts. Once enabled, WhatsApp users just need to tap and hold a voice message to see the new 'Transcribe' option appear.
Transcripts will roll out globally to all WhatsApp users over the coming weeks. "We're excited to build on this experience and make it even better and more seamless," the team said today.
