The new flyover bridge that connects eastbound I-35/80 to northbound I-35 opened Thursday, and drivers are getting used to the change. The Iowa Department of Transportation announced the opening Thursday morning on Facebook. Andy Swisher, a traffic operations engineer for the Iowa DOT, said they recognize it's a "big change for drivers.""I think maybe our advertising was lacking a little bit," Swisher said. "Maybe we didn't get the message out as good as we had hoped we could have."Signs are now posted on the side of the interstate. Drivers need to get over to the right lane instead of the left to head north. Swisher said the DOT will be monitoring traffic in the area for the next week."If we're still having problems, then we'll have to look at additional signage or something that we can put out to help give the driver more information so they can make better decisions," he said. Swisher said he hopes people will get used to the new bridge quickly. He is confident the new design will keep drivers safe."We're always looking to improve traffic efficiency and traffic safety on our roadways, and this was a big one," he said.
